dame okoDelta State First lady, Dame Edith Okowa put a smile on the faces of inmates at Ogwashi-uku prison, as she celebrated her birthday on Monday June 1, 2015, in a grand style with prisoners at the correction facility, located in Aniocha South LGA, Delta state.

The birthday celebrations started with prayers and praise worship to the Almighty for the gift of life, after which the inmates and staff of the prison facility expressed gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to felicitate with their august visitor on the auspicious occasion of her birthday.

Addressing the inmates in his opening remarks, the prison Controller applauded the first lady for her love and kindness in celebrating her birthday with inmates of the prison, adding that this was an occasion the inmates would treasure eternally as it was clearly the first official act of the first Lady after the swearing-in ceremony on May 29, 2015.

Also speaking during the visit, the Deputy Controller of Prisons, DCP Igbavboa and the officer In-Charge, Medium Security Prison, Ade John, in their respective remarks, used the opportunity to wish Dame Edith Okowa a happy birthday and also congratulate Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, for his well deserved victory at the gubernatorial election and successful inauguration as the Executive Governor of Delta State.

The inmates were subsequently admonished in a sermon taken from the Book of 2nd Corinthians Chapter 4 vs 15-18, which reads thus: “For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen : for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal”.

They were further enjoined to hope on the Lord God in all things and for as many who were yet to accept Jesus Christ to do so, because in Christ there is everlasting prosperity.

The celebrant, Dame Edith Okowa, also known as Mama Delta, who charged the inmates to accept the fact that Life is not a right but a privilege and urged them to always smile irrespective of the difficulties because there is hope where there is life, was then taken round on a tour of the Prison facilities including the various dormitories that housed the inmates.

Highpoint of the celebratory visit was the cutting of the birthday cake, the distribution of various gift and other essential items to the inmates and a firm promise by Dame Okowa to address some of the challenges facing the prisoners in the course of her tenure.

The first lady was accompanied by top PDP woman leader and former Chairman, Delta State Local Government Service Commission, Chief Nkem Okwuofu, as well as former Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs Chief Betty Efekoda, amongst other top dignitaries.
