Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has urged Media Practitioners to always cross check their facts before going to press to enable them give objective reportage of events. Dr. Banigo stated this when the Management Team of Garden City Radio, 89.9 FM paid her a courtesy visit in Government House, Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor who described the media as a powerful tool for mobilisation and sensitization of the people charged Radio stations to use their privileged position to educate, enlighten and entertain the citizens to bring about positive change in society.
She assured them that the State Government under the leadership of Chief Nyesom Wike, is committed to the development of State Media Organs to enable them discharge their duties effectively. Dr. Banigo reiterated the desire of the present administration to ensure regular training and retraining of workers to enhance efficiency in their career.
The Deputy Governor thanked the Management of Garden City Radio for their visit noting that the recognition of excellent performance and need to reposition the State Media outfits necessitated the appointment of new General Managers, for the two State Owned Media Houses.
According to her, “we shall continue to work together and encourage you to give factual coverage of events to retain the credibility of your medium.” She congratulated the General Manager of Garden City Radio for the pioneering efforts that has positioned the organization as one of the leading voices in Radio Broadcasting in the state and beyond.
Earlier, the General Manager, Garden City Radio 89.9 FM, Mr. Dagogo Ezekiel- Hart, congratulated her for being the First Female Deputy Governor of the state that has unparalled track record of performance and promised that Garden City Radio would champion publicity of government policies and programmes on youths, education, breast feeding, women empowerment etc.
Mr. Ezekiel Hart disclosed that since the establishment of the Radio Station over four years ago, it had operated like a Commercial Station, surviving without subvention from Government and has been able to sustain its standard.
He therefore solicited for support from the government to enhance the viability of the station which has made steady progress within the few years of its existence to meet the current digitalization current
