OKOWA ADVOCATES ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES IN UNIVERSITIES, AS PANACEA FOR YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

OKOUNIV1To make university graduates self-reliant and employers of labour, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has advocated for the inculcation of entrepreneurial studies in university curriculum.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in Asaba during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary Nigerian University Commission (NUC) Prof. Julius Okojie represented by Director, Student Support Services, Dr. Rukayyatu Gurin and management team Governor Okowa said that entrepreneurial studies if made a core course in the universities would imbibe in the students entrepreneurial and wealth creation skills, confidence and self- reliance to become employers of labour.

According to him, “Your entrepreneurship program is laudable, we need to move from the present paper qualification to entrepreneurship to enable our youths grow. If our youths are better informed and skilled they will have hope and be able to take care for themselves. I wish to call on you to make the entrepreneurship program a core course and it should span throughout the student’s stay in the university,” he said.

“For our society to grow and be peaceful we need to engage the youths, give them entrepreneurial skills so that they can fend for themselves; this we are doing in Delta state through our wealth creation programs’’ he added.

While commending NUC for its entrepreneurial programs the governor promised to partner with them in achieving this goal, stressing that they should ensure the participation of both public and private institutions in these programs.

Earlier, Prof Okojie has informed the governor that they were in the state to seek for partnership in its (NUC) entrepreneurship programmes –the Annual National Entrepreneurship Week (ANEW) and the National Entrepreneurship Resource and Knowledge Centre (NERKC)

Professor okojie stressed that with entrepreneurship training added to the university curriculum, students will be better prepared for life after school.

While commending the state’s wealth creation program he said that partnering with the state government would help NUC re-orient and mould the character of the youth towards a greater future.
