At the Party’s national convention on 21/05/16, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu, former Governor of Niger State, moved a motion to zone the Presidential position of the PDP in the 2019 elections to the Northern part of Nigeria and the motion was seconded by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and it was unanimously accepted.
Also, at the convention, former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi emerged the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party and Dr. Ben Obi as his Secretary.
Senator Godswill Akpabio moved the motion to set up a National Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the party pending the organizing of another national convention to conduct elections within 90 days and was seconded by Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State.
Hon. Odion Ugbesia will represent South South geo-political zone in the committee.
The convention which was held amidst fun-fare was declared open by Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who stated, “we are here to tell the world that we handed to the APC-led government, the biggest economy in West Africa, but, today there is nothing to talk about our economy, one year ago, we chased Boko Haram to Sambissa forest, but, today, Boko Haram is all over the country.”
Senator Wale Jubril, Chairman of the Board of Trustees said, “we will bring everybody together, this party is for all of us and we will come back to power in 2019.”
Chairman, PDP Governors Forum, Dr Olusegun Mimiko flanked by all the PDP Governors stated, “we will do everything within our endeavour to strengthen our party, we did not know how to conduct elections and make them inconclusive, we believe in the rule of law,” adding, “in all the 16 years of the PDP, yes, PDP is not a perfect party but, there is no perfect human being. But, I ask Nigerians today, are you more secured today than a year ago? We cannot talk about democracy if we don’t have a country, the PDP will continue to do what it knows how to do -uniting the country; the PDP states will continue to provide unmatched governance, we encourage Nigerians to remain united.”
Earlier in a welcome address, the Chairman of the convention committee, Barr. Nyesom Wike said, “today, Nigerians know that we have only one united party, that is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), today’s convention is unique because, this is the first time we are moving the convention from Abuja to any other state.”
Delegates from different states of the country attended the convention which was witnessed by officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
