The Governor made the call on 26/05/16, in Asaba when the Consul-General of the United States of America, Mr John Bray paid him a courtesy visit.
“The fact is that the communities begin to worry about the government, the companies, the actions of the military,” the Governor observed, adding, “they are worried about the companies not doing much for them and that they are not carried along in the course of plans to engender peace and to that extent when they get alienated from us, we as a government may not get the best of intelligence and cooperation from them,”
Governor Okowa who informed the visiting officials of the USA, disclosed that to curb nefarious activities in the creeks, his administration set up a high-powered Advocacy Committee which has as Chairman, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro.
According to him, “we started this advocacy initiative so that they (the communities) realize that we are partners in progress and that when we work together it could eventually become a win-win situation, so, we need to build trust and that is why we inaugurated the Advocacy Committee.”
“They (the Advocacy Committee) have to continue the process which we realize cannot be done in a week, but has to be a continuous process, until we get all the communities to buy into the peace building initiative,” he said, reiterating, “a few suggestions have been coming up in the first advocacy visits, we will sieve the information to see how we can collaborate with the law enforcement agencies, oil companies and how we can partner with each other and create that trust, build that trust between the communities and government so that we can achieve a better economic environment.”
While assuring of his administration’s commitment to partner with investors and progressive governments, Governor Okowa noted that within one year of being in office, he has created platforms for the youths of the state to become entrepreneurs and job creators through Youth Agriculture Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP), Skills Training and Entrepreneurs Programme (STEP), among others.
Earlier, Mr Bray commended Governor Okowa’s efforts towards creating enabling environment for investments to thrive, disclosing that he was on a familiarization tour of the state to meet with stakeholders and investors.
