Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has cautioned traditional rulers in the State against making inflammatory statements, and advised them to channel their energies into issues that would unite the State and the Country, even as he urged them to use their good offices to promote peace and rapid socioeconomic development in their various domains, adding that everyone in State should embrace peace at all times, as that is only way of ensuring an enduring peace that brings about social and economic development.
The Delta State Governor gave the advice in his address at the presentation of Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Jackson Foubriowei Angalabiri, the Ebenanaowei of Kumbowei Clan, Patani Local Government Area of the State, on Friday, 22nd July, 2016.
Dr. Okowa who was represented by his deputy and acting Governor of the State, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro stated that his administration will continue to strengthen the traditional institution, accord traditional rulers due recognition, honour and respect, including the provision of an enabling environment for them to perform their roles, adding that his administration hold the new King and other kings in high esteem.
He appealed to Royal Majesties in the State to discharge their responsibilities in a transparent manner by being fair and just to their subjects.
“You are the father of all your subjects, so you should treat everyone like a father does to members of his family. As the custodian of the tradition of your people, it is important that you do not, in words or action, give any cause to your subjects to doubt your ability to uphold the sanctity of their customs. I sincerely appeal to you to imbibe the democratic norms of dialogue and consultation in all your dealings with the people.” Dr. Okowa advised.
The Delta State Governor noted that, it is statutory for the State Government to present Staff of Office to traditional ruler after due installation and endorsement by his people according to the Laws of Delta State, pointing out that this event is in compliance with the statute and an endorsement of the peaceful manner, the whole process of this ascension has taken.
Dr. Okowa commended the people of Kumbowei Clan for passing through all hurdles in the selection of their king and implored the new King to see his elevation as an invitation to contribute his quota to the development of Kumbowei Clan, adding that this duty is even more sacred, since the king is closest to the grassroots, where the impact of the current national economic challenge is mostly felt.
He also cautioned youths in the State to respect and raise their Kings high and appealed to everyone in Kumbowei Clan to accord the new King all the respect and deference due to him. “Hold him and the respectable norms of Kumbowei Clan in the highest esteem”, Otuaro admonished them.
The Delta state Governor then urged traditional rulers in the State to support government efforts to combat societal ills, especially kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry and other antisocial behaviours, and while expressing his appreciation for the kind sentiments and goodwill expressed towards his administration, assured them that he had also noted the requests the placed before government which will be channeled to the appropriate agencies for necessary action.
He equally acknowledged the hardship being faced by basic education teachers and other local government workers, over the unfortunate delay in salary payments, adding that he is feeling their pains and doing everything within his power and very limited resources to assist in bringing the crisis to an end.
Otuaro then congratulated His Royal Majesty, Jackson Foubriowe Angalabiri, on his appointment and recognition as the Ebenanaowei of Kumbowei Clan. And wish him God’s guidance, wisdom, good health and many years of peaceful and prosperous reign
